Damdama Lake, Gurgaon: Timings, Boating & Where to Stay

Craving open water, Aravalli views, and a picnic that does not need a long drive from the city? Set in the Aravalli foothills near Sohna, south of the city, Damdama Lake, Gurgaon, offers open water, rocky hills, and space for a slow day outdoors. Haryana Tourism calls its Saras complex beside the lake one of the most fascinating picnic spots close to the city.

Here is what to know before you go, from boating and water levels to the drive from Delhi. We have also added an easy way to turn the day into a relaxed weekend.

Where is Damdama Lake,  Gurgaon?

The lake lies about 10 km from the town of Sohna, south of the city. Down To Earth, the environmental news platform, places it across Damdama and Abheypur villages in Sohna block, framed by rocky Aravalli offshoots.

The lake itself dates back to 1947, when the British commissioned it to harvest rainwater for the area. A catchment of about 24.5 sq. km. feeds the water, according to a 2026 report. The tourism department of the state runs the Saras Tourist Complex right beside the lake with dining facilities.

Damdama Lake: Boating & Things to Do

At Damdama Lake, boating is the highlight for many visitors. Tourism websites list boating, canoeing, kayaking and trekking among the activities available at Damdama Lake, with camping facilities at the neighbouring tourist complex. When available, kayaking and canoeing offer a more active way to explore the lake, while a leisurely boat ride is a family-friendly option for those visiting with younger children.

Beyond the water, the setting suits slow and simple plans, from a packed picnic to an unhurried walk nearby. Take time to appreciate the area's birdlife, because at least 117 bird species have been recorded in the wider landscape. Binoculars are well worth packing on a winter visit, when cooler weather makes time outdoors more comfortable.

Water Levels: Check Before You Go

The Damdama Lake, Gurgaon, is rain-fed, so its water level rises and falls with the seasons and the strength of each monsoon (late June through September). With the lake shrinking over the years, a January 2026 report from Down To Earth found boats sitting well back from the water. Boating is therefore never guaranteed, so keep a picnic ready as your backup plan. Take care near the water banks, especially after rain, when the soil can turn slippery and unstable, and keep a safe distance from the water's edge.

A restoration agreement signed in December 2022 aims to revive the lake across about 80 acres, within a larger biodiversity park project.

Damdama Lake Timings & Entry

Damdama Lake is commonly listed as a daytime destination, with travel guides generally citing visiting hours of 10 AM to 6 PM. However, fixed official timings for the lake itself are not published on the Gurugram district administration or Haryana Tourism websites. Boating and other activities may follow separate schedules and depend on operating conditions, so confirm availability before travelling.

Mornings tend to be calmer and cooler for time by the water, especially in the warmer months. Arriving early also leaves time for lunch at the complex and an easy drive back before the evening traffic.

Best Time to Visit Damdama Lake, Gurgaon

Damdama Lake is often listed as an all-season destination, with October to March bringing the most comfortable outdoor days. Cooler winter air also makes a picnic by the water far more pleasant.

Summer afternoons can be hot and dusty, so keep any warm-weather visit to the early morning for a lovely sunrise. As the lake depends on rain, the weeks after the monsoon usually give it a better chance of holding water and a different way to experience the locality.
